The disconnect between loving our dogs and cats, yet eating the flesh and secretions of equally sentient cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, goats, sheep, and fish is deeply embedded into our culture’s dominant carnistic ideology. Inspired by Melanie Joy’s Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows, this song invites us to break through our denial and live in accordance with our core values.

Lyrics

TALKING VEGAN BLUES

I don’t eat no burgers, I don’t eat no dogs
I don’t eat no burgers, I don’t eat no dogs
I don’t eat no horses, I don’t eat no hogs
I don’t ever want to eat anything that has a face
No way, no how, no more, no time, no place
It just feels all wrong at the table when I’m saying grace

If you love animals, please tell me how
You love your dog but you eat that cow
You love your cat but eat chickens and pigs
Won’t you tell me once again just why that is

I don’t eat no roosters, I don’t eat no hens
I don’t eat their eggs, I don’t want to steal their chicks from them
And take them away from their family and friends
I just want to feel love in my heart and joy in my soul
And I've learned that the best way to feel like that is following the Golden Rule
Live and let live, and baby don’t be cruel

So if you love animals, please tell me how
You love your dog but you eat that cow
You love your cat but eat chickens and pigs
Won’t you tell me once again just why that is

I’ve weaned myself from the milk of a mother cow
And ever since I realized that it’s their skin, I don’t wear no leather now
When I heard their babies’ cries, that’s when I took my vow
I don’t have a spare rib, and neither do they
And I don’t ever want to eat another turkey corpse, not even on Thanksgiving Day
‘Cause their legs are made for walking, and if they could they would have run away

Yes, we all love our dogs and cats
But all God’s creatures are a lot like that
They don’t want to die, we all know it’s true
So let’s all go vegan, they’re depending on you
